The Emancipation Proclamation for Indian Education

The Twelfth Step: Using Technology Wisely

Technology is expensive and millions and million of dollars are being spent to bring our schools into the 21st Century. The monumental rush to introduce technology to the schools is a disaster without adequate teacher training and preparation. Our computers sit there unused or barely used because teachers do not understand and have not been trained to understand the value of the technology they have. If teachers do not use or understand technology, it will be difficult for their students to do so. There is a sound research basis to use computer assisted instruction to enhance student learning. There is immediate feedback and praise with computers. Yet if students get barely twenty minutes a week on the computer, they are hardly a bridge to the next century. Computer technology, to be effective, must be used in a regular and consistent program where students have genuine access every day. The use of notebook computers which students can take home may enhance the use of computers in the schools. The most common use of computers at some schools is reward for student work. These computers are used to play games without any educational benefits. School districts need to remove the games from the computers. No technology should be allowed in any building or classroom until adequate skills and training have been developed by teachers.
